Splügen

Highlight • Settlement

The southern Swiss town of Splügen was and is a typical mountain pass village. Then as now, merchants, artists and tourists stopped here before continuing on their way north or south. Before the construction of the Bernardino and Gotthard tunnels, the Splügen Pass was the only direct transfer route to the south. Old warehouses and customs posts still characterize the times of yesteryear.

You can live particularly peacefully and eat very, very well in the “Hotel Bodenhaus”. It is rumored that Napoleon, Queen Victoria and Albert lived here. More information: hotel-bodenhaus.ch.

Sufnersee

Highlight • Lake

Sufnersee in Rheinwald
The Sufnersee is located in the area of the municipalities of Sufers and Rheinwald. The lake can be reached via the San Bernardino route. The A13 runs along the lake. The only town on the lake is Sufers.
The Sufers dam was completed in 1962. Around 30 hectares of meadowland were lost. To compensate for this loss, the existing humus was extracted from the reservoir during construction and distributed over poor soils. These soil improvements made it possible to increase agricultural production. There is no power plant on the lake, the water is channeled to the Bärenburg power station or via the Lago di Lei reservoir and the Ferrera balancing basin to the Ferrera power station.

It is worth taking a look over the railing as you drive past. Stopping only in clear places, as the road is very narrow!

Via Mala Gorge near Thusis

Highlight • Gorge

The road through the eight-kilometer-long Via Mala Gorge begins at this striking rock behind Thusis. Even in Roman times, the "Bad Way" was an important connection to the Alpine passes of San Bernardino and Splügen.

Remains of snow on the S. Bernadino ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ from 1800m.
Historic Italian road with a Tremola feeling between Hinterrhein and Andeer.
Another highlight: the impressive Viamala Gorge (near Thusis). There wasn't much time for sightseeing during the QD Switzerland Tour 2017.
The last 40km in 🌧. Icy hands on the last descent 🥶.
