Bear Sculpture on Mount Ślęża

Highlight • Monument

Cult sculptures in the vicinity of Mount Ślęża - marked with the sign of an oblique cross, were created in the period of 700 - 400 BC at the latest. All cult sculptures are the work of the local population of the Lusatian culture period, who erected monuments to their deities by carving stone blocks or figures of people and animals from the local granite.
The bear, often called the Ślęża bear - a stone sculpture with perfectly captured characteristics of the animal species, standing on the top of Ślęża, next to the church. He has a diagonal cross mark on his belly.

Mount Ślęża

Highlight • Summit

The highest peak of the Ślęża Massif and the entire Sudety Foothills, rising to a height of 718 m above sea level. Despite its low absolute height, the massif has an impressive appearance due to its considerable relative height (over 500 m). It towers over the surrounding area.
At the top, there are numerous resting places, beautiful views, an old church, a tourist house, ruins of a castle, a radio and television mast, an observation tower, sculptures of pagan worship.
The mountain was a religious center of the solar cult of local tribes - its beginnings date back to the Bronze Age, and the beginning of its decline falls on the beginning of the Christianization of these areas in the 10th and 11th centuries. and the bear” associated with the Celtic cultural circle. Fragments of stone ramparts were also found, about 12 m wide, made of stone fragments, and mysterious statues with a characteristic symbol of an oblique cross - according to the researchers' hypotheses, a garbo cross. it was probably associated with a solar cult.

PTTK Tourist House on Mount Ślęża

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Tourist House is a different category from the PTTK shelter, which means that this building is subject to different rules than shelters. There was already a building on this site in 1837 and it has a long history. One of the more interesting rooms here was the current Knights' Hall (formerly the Ślęża Hermitage, where members of the Mountain Society met).

There is no running water here, so there is no accommodation, only a buffet.

The "Maiden with Fish" is a Celtic cult statue from the La Tène period (circa 400-200 BCE) carved from local granodiorite and standing about 2.2 meters tall, located near the summit of Mount Ślęża in Poland. The anthropomorphic sculpture depicts a human figure holding a large fish (likely a trout or salmon) vertically against their chest, though the statue is missing its head, neck, right arm, and parts of the legs due to erosion over time.

The statue was rediscovered in 1733 by Gottfried Heinrich Burghart in a rocky debris field on the northern slope of Ślęża, possibly in its original location which may have been a main cult site.
