Norowy Dół Gorge

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Norowy Dół is a ravine located in Kazimierz Dolny, on the right bank of the Vistula, between Aleja Kazimierza Wielkiego and Góry Pierwszemi and Góra Zamkowa. It is part of the edge of the Vistula valley, in the area of the Małopolska Vistula Gorge.

The history of the ravine is associated with the Nor family (or Nur family), which was mentioned in the Kazimierz Dolny city book as early as 1555. Their lands stretched in the area of the ravine, and in 1633 Stefan Nur purchased an oak grove. Names related to the Nory/Nury family appeared regularly in city records until the end of the 18th century, and the ravine and the street leading through it are still called Norowy Dół.

In the past, at the mouth of the ravine, there was an important nodal point of port facilities on the Vistula. The ravine is also an example of natural erosion, which had a destructive effect on human activity, including destroying roads and reducing the area of arable fields. Classes related to gully erosion are often held here.

The synagogue in Kazimierz Dolny, located at 4 Lubelska Street, has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. The first wooden synagogue was probably built in the 13th century, but the exact date and location are unknown. In the 16th century, a new, brick synagogue was built, which was destroyed after 1661 and rebuilt after 1677. Further destruction occurred in the 18th century, and the current building dates from the second half of that century.

The synagogue in the late Baroque style was built of limestone, and its plan is a rectangle measuring 14.8 x 16.9 m. The interior initially consisted only of the main prayer hall, with prayer rooms for women and other rooms added over time. The interior was decorated with polychromes, the plant and animal motifs of which have been described by researchers, although they have not survived today.

The synagogue was in operation until 1939, when it was closed by the Germans. It was devastated in 1944 and fell into ruin after the war. In 1953 it was rebuilt as a cinema, and the interior was adapted to new functions. In 2003 the cinema was closed.

Today there is a small museum and a shop with Judaisms.

The plaque is located on the outside wall of the synagogue, commemorates Polish Jews murdered by the Germans. The inscription reads: "In honor of three thousand Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, former residents of Kazimierz Dolny, murdered by the Nazi occupier during World War II."

Picturesque old town around the market

The city with about 3,600 inhabitants is picturesquely located on the breakthrough of the Vistula from the Lublin and the Lesser Polish highlands. Because of the trade routes that were bundled there, the settlement soon became an important merchant town in the 12th century, in which many Jewish families also settled. Magnificent palaces were built in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The rule of the Swedes and the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War made the city impoverished, so much of the old substance was preserved. Today the old town on a terrace over the Vistula is a little gem.
A little tip: In the middle of the market place under a wooden shoring, you can fill up fresh drinking water free of charge 🤗

A bronze dog figurine, I suspect that petting it brings something good depending on where you pet it. But I wouldn't dare to guess which part of the dog's body is responsible for success in a given area of life ;)
