Genoese bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Giussani, a high valley in the Balanin hinterland, is perched at an average altitude of 800 meters.

A network of marked and maintained paths allows you to discover the many Genoese bridges, built between the 13th and 18th centuries. These stone bridges were used to facilitate the transport of food, but also trade between isolated municipalities.

View of Mausoleo

Highly recommended is the way for the afternoon. The tour leads on old paved paths from villages down to the river over the first small bridge, then up over a hilltop and down to the second bridge. There you can wonderfully refresh yourself in small bath pumps before the way back. Overall, this is a wonderful way. Even uphill, the slope is only moderate tempered by the serpentine.

The outer walls and the millstone are still well preserved and you can see how the water mill worked:

The water was taken from the stream further up, led through a canal bed carved into the rock or built into the wall to behind the mill and from there it shot under the mill, where it drove a water wheel sitting horizontally on a vertical axis. The stone mill wheel sits on top of the axis. So everything without gears, transmissions or joints. Primitive, but evidently tried and tested, because the next mill was constructed in the same way.

On the way to the next mill you walk along the remains of the inflow canal.

Sculpted Rocks of the Fiume Tavignano

Highlight • Natural Monument

Over thousands of years, small stones rotating in the stream have rounded the large rock and created a lying sculpture with appealing, soft shapes. At low tide it even serves as a walk-in work of art.
