The Opatower Gate was built by Casimir the Great in the 14th century as part of the city fortifications. In addition, Sandomir had three other city gates: the Kraków, Lublin and Zawichoster city gates, as well as two smaller entrances, of which the Dominican gate is still preserved. During the January Uprising, on February 8, 1863, a battle between insurgents and Russian Cossacks took place at the gate.
