Stone Mill of Oelegem

Highlight • Monument

Construction started in 1845 by order of Martinus De Winter and it is said that the mill was not ready to grind until 1854. In 1891 the heirs sold the mill to Jan-Baptist Heylen, the then mayor of Oelegem. The installation was used less and less due to the advent of mechanical mills. The mill was last active in commercial service towards the end of the First World War. Since that time, the building has served various other functions: garage, warehouse, room for the Catholic Workers' Youth and as a country retreat. During the Second World War, the masonry was damaged by shelling and in 1942 the mill was given the status of monument. In 1962 the exterior was restored, which temporarily prevented further decay. Since 1982, the local history circle De Brakken van Oelegem has taken care of the monument.

The Beemden in the Kleine Netevallei is a nature reserve..

The nature reserve consists of a number of areas along the Kleine Nete. The areas are managed by Natuurpunt.

For a long time there were flood meadows along the Kleine Nete, to increase the yield of the hay meadows present there. In 1952 the Kleine Nete was canalized and the Netekanaal was constructed. The meadows lost their characteristic character. From 1985 onwards, attempts were made to restore biodiversity through purchase and protection.

Kleine Nete

Highlight • River

Cycling along the meandering Nete on the dike is wonderful. Because the dike is somewhat higher than the surrounding area, you have an excellent view of the surrounding landscapes.

At this location, the banks of the Kleine Nete are being restored along the Lower reaches of the Molenbeek-Bollaak. The restoration of the natural hydrology is an essential precondition for achieving a good state of conservation of the target habitat types and species in the stream valley landscape. Drainage and infiltration are important here. The numerous drainage ditches in the Kleine Nete valley, which have lost their function because there is no longer intensive agricultural use, must be deepened or diverted by the manager. Various actions have already been included in the integrated water management plans at river basin, basin and sub-basin level to partially restore the natural flooding dynamics of the Kleine Nete.
