Gudula Church, Lochem

Highlight • Religious Site

The history of the Gudula Church goes back to the ninth century with the suspicion of a wooden barn church in Lochem. The first written mention dates from 1059. At the end of the tenth century, the wooden church was replaced by a stone building. In the twelfth century there was a tuff basilica. This Romanesque church was replaced by a Gothic construction in the fourteenth century. The tower was added to the church in 1478. In the following century, the church was renovated several times and expanded into the current hall church. Fire and war damage have ravaged the church, especially the great city fire of April 6, 1615, which destroyed almost all houses in the city. In 1966, the Gudula Church was designated as a national monument. The last major restoration dates from the 1970s, during which many original elements were reconstructed and made visible.

During the 1940-1945 war, the Vromen family lived here, consisting of Salomon Joseph Vromen (47 years old), Mietje Vromen-Kannewasser (49 years old), Jansje Josephine Vromen (17 years old) and Sander Vromen (15 years old).
Since 1750, a Vromen family has lived in the town of Lochem. Until 1967, when the last Vromens left Lochem. Several members of the family are buried at the Jewish cemetery.
Until 1942, Salomon lived with his family in the house with the stepped gable from 1638. The building housed a shop selling draperies, hats and bedding.
At the beginning of November 1942, the entire family was brutally taken away on an open truck. They were all killed in Auschwitz on November 5, 1942.
After the war, the building came into the hands of the municipality. It has been a library and council chamber for the city council. In 2014 it became the property of Dirk and Anneke Scholten, the owners of Eetcafé Scholten at Bierstraat 4. They founded a restaurant there called 't Olde Raedthuys. This building had previously started as Richterhuis, home of the Lochem judiciary. It has also functioned as a loan house, also known as the house of the Savings Bank.
