View of the Bosbaan

Highlight • Viewpoint

On May 6, 1937, the first rowing competition was held on the then 2,200 meter long and 72 meter wide track. This concerned the 60th edition of the Varsity, which was previously held in the North Sea Canal. Because the Bosbaan was too short for the Varsity, this competition was moved to another location in 1940. The Bosbaan was only used once for this competition in 1971.
The Bosbaan was an alternative to the Amstel river and the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder, where rowing competitions were also held. The water depth is 3 meters and therefore just meets the minimum requirement for international competitions.
To comply with the applicable rules for international rowing events, the Bosbaan has been widened twice. The first time in 1963 with an expansion to six lanes and 92 meters, prior to the 1964 European Championship. The second time was in 2001 to 118 meters and eight competition lanes to meet the current conditions for world championships.

Sloten Windmill

Highlight • Monument

"De Molen van Sloten" is a polder mill in the ancient village of Sloten, just within the municipal boundary of Amsterdam and not far from Schiphol. It is an octagonal thatched oak tower mill on a stone base. Situated on the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder, the mill, together with the Akergemaal, provides drainage for the Western Garden Cities.

Sloten traditionally stood in the Riekermolen from 1636, it was moved in 1956 due to an excavation of the Riekerpolder to the Kalfjeslaan near the Amstel. Since 1991 Sloten has its own windmill again. A hull dating from 1847 from the Watergraafsmeer is placed on a brick substructure.

De Molen van Sloten is one of the few daily accessible 'working' mills in the Netherlands. In the mill you can see everything about the mill technology and the history of Sloten and Oud Osdorp.

Because Rembrandt van Rijn, the son of a miller, had connections with the village, there is a presentation in the "Rembrandt attic" with images of various Rembrandt characters.

The mill can be used as an official wedding location.

From SMS (SundayMorningSkate) this place is often the starting point for our trips.
It is extra nice that there is a chip shop behind the mill where we can eat and drink something afterwards ;-)

View of the Grote Vijver

Highlight • Lake

The name already gives it away a bit. This pond is a lot bigger than the Kleine Vijver a bit further. Incidentally, both ponds are connected to each other. There is also a canoe rental at the Grote Vijver.
