Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Fire Road Trail

Highlight (Segment) β€’ Trail

The Hoo-Koo-E-Koo Fire Road skirts the east side of Mount Tamalpais; its winding route features stunning scenic views of San Francisco Bay and the Marin peninsula. Some say the trail was named for a band of Coast Miwok Indians that lived nearby or because of Miwok middens discovered in the area.

Old Railroad Grade trail follows the route of the railroad that reached the peak of Mount Tam from Mill Valley (and a spur to Muir Beach) between 1896 and 1930. This segment starts about mid-mountain at the site of an old station (notice the concrete "sidewalk" on the side of the trail), at the intersection with Gravity Car Trail and Hoo-Koo-Ee-Koo trail, just above the Double Bowknot (a series of four hairpin curves of the old railroad). Since this used to be a railroad, it has a very steady average grade of around 6%, making it easy to climb up on a bike. About 2 miles from the old station platform the trail passes West Point Inn ( komoot.de/highlight/215020 ) , with snacks, picnic tables and restrooms (also offering romantic cabins with killer views across the whole bay). Rocky Ridge Road 🚡

Highlight (Segment) β€’ Trail

Great hiking and mountain biking on this gravel fire road in Mt Tamalpais watershed. It climbs first gradually and increasingly steep from the west side of the Bon Tempe Dam to the top of the ridge line above Bon Tempe Lake. It affords great views in all directions from the top, particularly across Alpine and Bon Tempe Lakes below, Northern Marin, and all the way across to the San Francisco Bay in the East.
For a sweet 2 hour 🚡 mountain bike loop with 4 lakes involving this trail segment check out komoot.de/highlight/153264
To avoid this steep climb you can follow the paved Sky Oaks Road between Bon Tempe Lake and Lake Lagunitas, or hike the (no bikes allowed) Shady Side Trail along Bon Tempe Lake.
