East Creek Slough Bridge at MLK Shoreline Park

Highlight • Bridge

Trails lead inland on both sides of the slough, connected by excellent bike/pedestrian bridges just before the mouth of the slough opens into the bay. The slough is an important habitat for birds, small remnant of the wetlands that once ringed around the entire San Francisco Bay, 95% of which have been destroyed.

East Creek Slough ⛵️ San Leandro

Originally, the large slough, running through the salt marsh on the east side of San Leandro Bay and the major tributary creek were named East Creek. The marsh has now been filled for the construction of the Coliseum and the industrial areas to the north. The various creeks that flowed into the East Creek slough have been combined into two flood-control channels. On the north, Peralta, Courtland, and Seminary Creeks are combined into a channel bearing the name East Creek Slough. On the south, Lion and Arroyo Viejo Creeks flow into a channel called Damon Slough. Tidewater Boating Center

Tidewater Boating Center was opened 2011 at the northwest end of Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline, off Tidewater Avenue in Oakland, on the shore of the Oakland Estuary in San Leandro Bay. This shoreline complex has an ADA accessible dock that is a popular launch area for kayakers. Also available are turf sites for picnicking and shoreline access for fishing. The 12,300-square-foot complex consists of a boathouse, training area, boat storage facility, Recreation Department offices, and a security residence. The Oakland Strokes, a non-profit junior rowing organization for middle and high schools, operates the main boathouse and indoor training area and provides outreach to neighborhood youths in the sport of competitive rowing. Other organizations provide on-the-water experiences with boating and water safety, sea kayaking, canoeing, and other water-related recreational programs. Park District recreation programs take advantage of the estuary access and the Bay Trail connection at the park, and include biking, nature study, kayaking, and canoeing programs. ebparks.org/parks/martinlking

Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline

Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline is a park within the East Bay Regional Park District that sits along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, just south of Oakland International Airport. This bay is home to the indigenous Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida) and is home to a variety of wildlife, including marsh hawks, black-shouldered kites, red-tailed hawks, and shorebirds. Bikers can circle this park on the paved San Francisco Bay Trail, a ride with a few feet of the waters edge.

Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline

Originally, this area was used as a landfill, but it was capped and is now designated as the Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline. Landfill operations stopped in 1977. The site has since been repurposed for visitors to enjoy dog walking, biking, hiking, and picnicking. There are future development plans to add active recreation areas, including facilities for disc golf and a bike park. More parking will be created within the park for better accessibility.
