View of the Störsperrwerk

Highlight • Monument

The barrier was built from 1971 to 1975 in the wake of the 1962 storm surge to protect against storm surges. A new muzzle was dug north of the old one. The old estuary is now used as a port. The federal road 431 runs over the barrier, which connects the Wilstermarsch with the Krempermarsch.

Unterfeuer Hollerwettern

Highlight • Monument

The Hollerwettern is a waterway with a lighthouse or leading light in the northwest of the municipality of Wewelsfleth in Schleswig-Holstein and is also the namesake of the local district.

The Hollerwettern, which is over 3 km long, drains the part of the Wilstermarsch located between Wewelsfleth and Brokdorf and flows into the Elbe via a pumping station. It is first mentioned in documents at the end of the 14th century; it was probably created as a result of the Holler colonization.

The old Hollerwettern lighthouse, located near its mouth, as well as the new lower leading light Hollerwettern, belonging to the Hollerwettern/Brokdorf leading light, are also named after the waterway.

Brunsbüttel Ferry Terminal

Highlight • Rest Area

14 ferries cross the Kiel Canal and connect the two banks. The ferry passages are free for vehicles and people. The basis for the free crossing of the canal is the obligation of the German Reich to provide free crossings for the traffic routes interrupted by the canal construction as part of the construction of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal (Kiel Canal) between 1887 and 1895.

Due to the high volume of traffic, two ferries are in use next to each other in Brunsbüttel and Nobiskrug near Rendsburg
The ferries on the Kiel Canal are inland vessels that have a standard carrying capacity of 45 t and can carry up to eight cars. Two Voith-Schneider propellers ensure good maneuverability.
The carrying capacity of the ferries regularly used in Brunsbüttel is 100 tons. Up to 21 cars can be transported at the same time.
The skippers of the ferries must have a nautical license. A deckhand assists them in loading and unloading the car ferry.

Very nice piece of the Elbe bike path. Also in the rain very photogenic :) But you have to note that there is no protection in the storm.

I have this one dream: to cycle the Elbe Cycle Path once. Ideally, from source to mouth ❤️
Today, however, I cycled from Brunsbüttel to the Stör Barrage. It was sooooo beautiful 🤩👌
Unfortunately, the app sent me past the Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant. The first gate was open, but I still felt a little uneasy. And then I had …

This morning the sun was already shining on us, it really does pay off to always eat our plates clean. We set off again from the old port of Brunsbüttel towards the ferry and crossed the NOK with it to get to Brunsbüttelkoog. Our first stop took us to Mole One with the historic lighthouse, which is also the headquarters …

The paved Aussendeich track between Glückstadt and Brokdorf is not in good condition (wider tires and less pressure are advisable... Or just take the road!). From Brokdorf to Brunsbüttel the path along the Elbe is paved and in mostly good condition.

A great time, which unfortunately will be the last time it takes place. A lot of money was certainly raised for cancer support.

A wonderful bike tour along the Elbe starting and finishing at the Glückstadt ferry. Relaxed driving on a wide bike path. Little to no traffic except Schaffe 🐑🐏😉 and many ships 🚢⛴️🛳️ on the Elbe. Mostly asphalt some paved. The plaster has one or the other damage but nothing wild no problem. Komoot has once again drawn a long straight …

Today our route took us to Brunsbüttel.

Actually only as far as the lock of the Kiel Canal, but since the ferry was free, we went further.
To round off our trip, we had an ice cream and a cold beer at Strandfloh in Bielenberg.
