Bicycle Street Oldenburg–Bad Zwischenahn

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

With the new cycle path to Oldenburg via Specken, Kayhausen, Kayhauserfeld, Petersfehn I and II, Bloh, Kleefeld, Friedrichsfehn, and Wildenloh, the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn is contributing to the transport transition in rural areas.

From June 2022 to December 2023, the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn built a cycle path that runs from Lake Zwischenahn to Oldenburg. It will connect the farming communities of Specken, Kayhausen, Kayhauserfeld, Petersfehn I and II, Bloh, Kleefeld, Friedrichsfehn, and Wildenloh. The goal is to encourage as many people as possible who travel by car between Bad Zwischenahn and Oldenburg or the surrounding farming communities to switch to cycling. According to the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn, up to 100 tons of CO2 could be saved annually. The new cycle path is intended to make commuter and school transport safer and more convenient. In addition, the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn is planning additional new cycle routes to supplement the existing network and also connect residential areas in Edewecht and Oldenburg.

The new cycle path is approximately 11 km long and cost approximately €10 million. It is receiving a good €9 million in funding from the federal "Town and Country" program. This is subject to the condition that the cycle path must be completed by the end of 2023. For the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn, the tight timeframe of 1.5 years was probably the greatest challenge in this project. According to district administrator Andreas Gronde, the construction work also resulted in significant restrictions for residents, so the municipality had to engage in numerous discussions to gain acceptance. The measures are now complete, and cyclists can use the new cycle path. A ceremonial opening is planned for spring 2024.

Great cycle highway to Oldenburg. I experienced the Heiderosenweg on asphalt for the first time. I grew up in the area and I only knew the Heiderosenweg as a sandy path or gravel road.
I have already seen one or two problems along the entire cycle path:
- There are already gaps and waves on the completely new section between Hermann-Löns-Straße and the center line.
-Why the heck were parts of the Wildenlohs line paved? Here too there are some slight holes, loose stones on farm driveways.

Sometimes it would be really good if some local politicians went to the Netherlands to find out how to build cycle highways through the moors ;-)

But I admit. It's complaining on a high level, but it's a shame that such a good project wasn't thought through all the way to the end.

Bog body from Ammerland How the boy from Kayhausen was found 100 years ago. On July 3, 1922, Friedrich Roggemann encountered resistance near the peat ditch. He then uncovered a body piece by piece: Roggemann had discovered the boy from Kayhausen.
