Wienerwald Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Wienerwaldsee, located 20 km west of Vienna, is a reservoir and the largest still body of water in the Wienerwald. It lies between the communities of Purkersdorf, Tullnerbach and Pressbaum. The lake, fed by the Wien River and the Wolfsgrabenbach, was used as a water reservoir until recently. The area is a water protection area, where swimming is forbidden in summer, as is ice skating in winter. Accordingly, the Wienerwaldsee has established itself as a habitat for a diverse flora and fauna. There are well-marked and well-maintained paths around the lake, which are popular with recreational athletes and walkers.

Wienerwaldsee Dam

Highlight • Monument

The Wienerwaldsee dam is a structure that creates a shallow reservoir in the Vienna Woods. The lake is located 20 km west of Vienna and serves as a flood retention basin for the Vienna River and the Wolfsgrabenbach. The lake was built between 1895 and 1897 and was previously a useful and drinking water reservoir for the Wiental water pipeline. Today the lake is a water protection area and a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. On the northern bank there is a monument to Wilhelm Kress, who had an accident with his seaplane here in 1901.

Starting in the north (Neu-Purkersdorf) this segment has an average gradient of 4%, climbing 90m over the course of 2,2km on pretty smooth gravel. In case anyone was wondering how steep »Steilo« is. All things are relative.

St. Hubertus Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint Hubert, to whom this Deutschwald chapel is dedicated, lived from 655 to 727 and is a very popular saint, best known as the patron saint of hunters. A stag with a glowing cross between the antlers is said to have appeared to him, which is often shown in Hubertus portraits. This legend was originally attributed to Saint Eustace and over time 'migrated' to Hubertus. His memorial day in the calendar of saints is November 3rd.
