Valverde Tunnel

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

A 400-meter tunnel that connects Mioño with Castro Urdiales, crossing the slopes of the Cueto hill. It is used by both pedestrians and cyclists. From Castro Urdiales to Mioño there is a slight climb, but without problems. Around there is a thick vegetation where ferns and mosses are good indicators of the humidity that surrounds this natural environment.

Itsaslur Coastal Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This coastal stretch of greenway is beautiful, but it comes at the price of pushing your bike along a long flight of stairs. If you decide to make the effort, the reward is a delicious walk with impressive views of the cliffs and the sea, as well as seeing the industrial remains of the area.

Greenway of the Montes del Hierro

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This cycle path is an exemplary example of what a successful cycle infrastructure looks like. It takes you from the beach town of La Arena to the center of Barakaldo (or the other way around). The path is not a bicycle path that has been removed from the car path with street paint, but rather it is an independent path with a surface that is easy to roll on. At the beginning (or end) of the path you drive through a quiet valley on a slight incline.

Portugalete Transporter Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Puente Colgante is a suspension bridge that connects the former fishing towns of Getxo and Portugalete. Via the floating construction, both vehicles and passengers can be transported between these two towns 365 days a year. This hanging bridge, also called Puente Bizkaia, is located 10 kilometers from the center of Bilbao.
The metal Puente Bizkaia was built in 1893 by Alberto Palacio with the aim of linking the two banks of the mouth of the River Nervión without hindering shipping. Palacio was a student of the famous Gustave Eiffel (The Designer of the Eiffel Tower). Puente colgante means 'suspension bridge' in Spanish, but officially it is a suspension bridge with a length of 164 meters over the river Ría del Nervión, which also flows right through the city of Bilbao. The bridge Puente Bizkaia is located just before the point where the Nervión flows into the Cantabrian Sea. Since 2006, the Puente Colgante has also been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, partly because the bridge was an engineering marvel with the most modern techniques in its time. The 'Puente Bizkaia' bridge was considered the triumphal arch of the newly formed industrial civilization from the beginning.

Piquillo Greenway

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Piquillo Greenway in Ontón is an easy route with children in Cantabria. It is located in Ontón, a neighborhood of Castro Urdiales, on the border with Vizcaya, and is completely accessible for everyone to enjoy.

The Greenways in Cantabria take advantage of the layout of the railways that were created to transport the ore from the multiple mining deposits that were in the region.

In this way, we are offered the possibility of making a flat route of just under 2 kilometers, until crossing the Basque Country, enjoy an unparalleled coastal landscape while approaching the mining past of Northern Spain.

Boat across the Ría de Treto

Highlight • Rest Area

As already said, a lovely experience and saves a large detour. Difficult with a loaded touring bike on one's own as the sand is soft and the ramp steep, so thought I'd need to remove the panniers, but the ferryman just grabbed the front of the bike and pulled it aboard. Make sure you have the fare for the bike as well as yourself. Steps off the pier can be slippy but had help from another passenger.
