Hermitage of San Roque

Highlight • Religious Site

Located on Camino Real street in Cartes (the old royal road crossed right here), this hermitage was the old chapel of the Hospital for the poor and pilgrims of San Sebastián, which in the middle of the 17th century was in ruins. With the passage of time the devotion to San Roque became more popular, entrusting the protection to the Council in 1803 and swearing "votes to the saint to celebrate it every year".
From the street you can see its interior and it preserves two baroque carvings of interest, those of its patrons San Sebastián and San Roque.

Torreón de Cartes

Highlight • Historical Site

The medieval Torreón de Cartes is located on Calle Camino Real, made up of two medieval towers, Gothic in style and linked by arches that cross the main street and declared a historic-artistic complex in 1985, apart from being a popular symbol widely used by area.

They are the remains of an old fortress built by the Manrique family in the 15th century to defend themselves against the nearby lords of La Vega (present-day Torrelavega), begun in 1421. In 1432 it became the headquarters of justice for the Toranzo valley , doing the functions of audience and prison; Later it would also be the residence of the county corregidor.

Las Caldas de Besaya Spa

Highlight • Structure

The spa is located in Las Caldas de Besaya, which belongs to Los Corrales de Buelna, and this name is thanks to the spring of thermal waters that flows nearby, already known since Roman times (warm waters).

On November 15, 1753, the old "Wool Road" or "Flour Road" that ran through this point and along the Besaya, achieved the rank of "Royal Road", notably improving the transport conditions of Castilian products destined for our coastal ports, for export overseas. The building is located next to the train stop across the old donkey-back bridge. Years later, the main road passed by, and all of this contributed to facilitating the communications of the Spa, although currently they are all out of use, but this has not caused the number of travelers to decrease and they remain very popular.

The spa was built in the mid-19th century next to the hotel, the inn, and the casino, which was formerly an annex building. Today it is restored, being considered the oldest in the region and continues to receive those who wish to benefit from its mineral-medicinal waters.
