The pedestals and the figures are part of a memorial to Frederick the Great, which was inaugurated on October 8th. The memorial stood in front of the gate of the central castle until World War II. After the war, the bronze statue of the Prussian king was melted down. The base and the grand master figures have been preserved and are now in the courtyard of the central palace. Each of the Grand Masters depicted here played a special role in the history of the Teutonic Order and the Marienburg. Conrad I, Duke of Mazovia, brought the Teutonic Order, headed by Hermann von Salza, to this area in 1226, so that he could help him in the fight against the unbelieving Pruzzen. After the bloody work was done, the order received land as a reward, which became the starting point for an incredible development of power in the following centuries. In 1309 Siegfried von Feuchtwangen moved the seat of the Teutonic Order from Venice to Marienburg. Winrich von Kniprode, the 22nd Grand Master, was at the head of the order from 1351 to 1382 and represents its heyday.
