Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sejny

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1610-1619 in the late Renaissance style by the Dominicans who came to Sejny from Vilnius in 1602. The founder of the monastery in Sejny was Jerzy Grodziński.

The church was consecrated in 1632 by Bishop Jerzy Tyszkiewicz invoking the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. George and the Blessed Boy. The church was later expanded to include a complex of monastery buildings, which was completed in 1706. In 1760-1779 the church was rebuilt in the Vilna Baroque style. The founder of this project was Róża z Platerów Strutyńska.

During the renovation, the orientation of the church was changed. A monumental two-towered façade was built on the site of the former presbytery, and two bays were added to the interior. During the work, the extensions connected to the nave and the chancel were removed. The bell tower on the north side of the church was demolished (Translated from Wikipedia).
