Huccorgne War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

Along the Méhaigne River, at the bridge between Moha and Huccorgne, stands a small but significant war memorial. It commemorates the inhabitants of the valley hamlet who died during the First and Second World Wars, often civilians and resistance fighters from the immediate area. The Méhaigne Valley was a strategic crossing at the time, leading to regular checks, arrests, and confrontations around the bridge. The simple, understated monument preserves the names of those who lived here and never returned. In its simplicity, it serves as a quiet reminder of a small community that felt the war particularly hard.

The Méhaigne River at Moha

Highlight • River

The Méhaigne is a small but historically significant river. It originates in Hélécine (on the Flemish Brabant border) and flows through the Hesbaye towards the Meuse, where it flows into Huy.
At Moha, the river leaves the undulating farmland of the Hesbaye and carves a deep valley in the limestone massif.
This suddenly makes the landscape much more rugged. Steep rock faces, natural caves, and karst features characterize the valley.
This geology also explains why the Castle of Moha was built on a rock: the Méhaigne made the site both strategic and naturally defended.

Famelette Castle

Highlight • Castle

Probably, originally, one of the peripheral fortifications of the castle of Moha. In 1234, under Hugues de Pierrepont, Thiry de Lardenois de Famelette is castellan of Moha and this charge remained in his lineage in 1441. The allodial lordship of Famelette is held by Colar de Hosden, by succession from Maroie daughter of Thiry Lardenois. In 1558, through the marriage of Catherine de Hosden, it passed to the Berlaymont de Floyon, who would keep the castle until the beginning of the 19th century. Subsequently owned by the Aspremont Lynden, it was repurchased around 1878 by the Collinet family. Located on a spur overlooking the Méhaigne, the castle developed around a square-plan keep built in the 14th century, now to the west of the complex. Most of the current buildings date from the mid-16th century. Construction in limestone rubblework once covered with a pink wash. Slate gable roof with eaves and hip. Two hip dormers, facing outwards. To the right of the porch, stable wings under hayloft from the mid-16th century in limestone rubblework. The southwest side of the courtyard is occupied by a significant dwelling, redeveloped twice in the 18th century, on a mid-16th century core. chateau-fort-manoir-chateau.eu/chateaux-province-liege-chateau-de-famelette-huccorgne.html
