Nieuwpoort Fishermen's Monument

Highlight • Monument

The Fishermen's Monument in Nieuwpoort is centrally located on the Kaaiplein, near the municipal Fish Market. This life-size bronze statue by artist Pierre de Soete was unveiled on 13 July 1958 by Prince Albert as a lasting tribute to all Belgian fishermen who died at sea. In 2009, a memorial plaque was added to the foot of the monument with the names of the Nieuwpoort fishermen who never returned.

Nieuwpoort Town Hall and Market Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The Nieuwpoort grain hall belongs to the type of smaller Flemish halls from the Middle Ages. The late Gothic style suggests that this building was built around 1480. The flourishing trading history of our coastal city emphasizes that there was a halle in Nieuwpoort in 1280.
The halle is mentioned again when the count tax was collected in 1313.
After the fire disaster in 1383, when a large part of the city was destroyed, the halle even temporarily functioned as City Hall.
The Stadshalle also did not escape the destruction during the First World War. On October 17, 1914, the halletoren was dynamited by the Belgian army. This was to prevent the belfry from becoming a target for the German artillery. Four years of shelling did the rest. The medieval market building was transformed into a desolate mess.

During the reconstruction of Nieuwpoort, the Stadshalle and the belfry were reconstructed in the original style and with the same material. The reconstruction was carried out under the direction of architect Jozef Viérin.

In May 1940, the Stadshalle was hit during a German air raid, resulting in a partial collapse of the roof.

After the damage from World War II was repaired, the ground floor was converted into a Museum for Birds and Crustaceans in 1956. There was a panoramic painting of 60 meters in length, which was restored in 1986 by Marc Bollion. In 1972 the Museum of History and Folklore was housed in the upper room of the Stadshalle. The museums were dismantled in the 1990s to enable a total restoration of the Stadshalle.

The City Hall is now mainly used as a reception and exhibition space for the City. The belfry has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, together with 23 other belfry towers in Flanders.

Nieuwpoort Belfry

Highlight • Historical Site

The belfry of Nieuwpoort is conceived as a partial extension of the front of the building. It towers over the rectangular hall of 14th century origin belonging to the cross-border brick Gothic. During the First World War, the tower was dynamited and the halle, along with the entire city, was almost completely destroyed. In 1921-1923, the belfry and the halle were reconstructed according to a historical model. The crowning has now been worked out, so that the belfry is more in line with the regional church towers. The hall has the same appearance as the first one, which was probably built in 1280 in late Gothic style.

Frontzate Railway Path

Highlight • Cycleway

Straight gravel road that connects an old railway line Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide. Important place during WWI. Fine gravel, so certainly possible with the regular bike and even a racing bike is not impossible.

World War I Shelter Ramskapelle

Highlight • Historical Site

The reconstructed shelter along the Frontzate in Ramskapelle is a remnant from the First World War. The Frontzate, which is now a cycle path over the old railway bed from Nieuwpoort to Diksmuide, formed the Belgian line during the war by flooding the IJzer plain.
The shelter in Ramskapelle was one of these constructions on that line and can be recognised by the bas-relief of a cross on the back of the building.

The small memorial on the former railway 74 Diksmuide-Nieuwpoort shows a Belgian, a French and a German soldier. The village of Rampskapelle was occupied by the Germans in October 1914, but a bloody attack drove them back behind the river Ijzer.

The Nieuwpoort lock complex is better known as 'De Ganzepoot'. The name refers to the shape of the entire complex. This place played a crucial role during the First World War. In October 1914, the opening of the locks caused the flooding of the IJzervlakte. This put an end to the advance of the German troops. With the help of the locks, the IJzervlakte remained flooded throughout the war.
At the end of 2014, the Westfront Nieuwpoort Visitor Center opened here, where you can learn more about the role of the lock complex and the flooding during WWI.
