On October 17, 1943, the old water tower of Zandvoort was destroyed using 12 explosive charges. After the war, a new water tower with a view was built at the highest point within the developed area. The 48 meter high tower was built in 1952 according to a design by J. Zietsma and was located south of the village on the site of the former Haarlem Kinderhuis. He was originally planned as a round tower but eventually got an octagonal shape. The former water tower was made entirely of reinforced concrete.
The new, however, was from the outside with bricks with a concrete interior.

At its summit there was a café-restaurant where one could enjoy many years of beautiful views until it was closed in the nineties.
