View of Monte Cofano and the bay

Highlight • Viewpoint

A varied landscape awaits you on your way to the viewpoint. The path winds through green meadows, past fragrant broom and prickly dwarf palms, and repeatedly opens up views of the coast and the wide sea. The point where you finally arrive offers a sweeping view of Monte Cofano, which towers majestically over the stretch of coast. The view of the bay that you have on clear days is breathtaking and invites you to take a short break and take in the surroundings.

The scenery radiates tranquility and it is easy to sit down here for a while to enjoy the beauty of nature. Especially on days with a light breeze, when the waves roll gently against the coast, a harmonious picture of blue and green tones emerges that combines perfectly with the rocky landscape.

Baglio Cofano

Highlight • Structure

The Baglio Cofano offers an authentic, rustic experience in an impressive natural setting. This old agricultural structure, typical of the region, recalls times gone by when everyday life was characterized by simple ways of life. Surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve, the Baglio is the perfect starting point for hikes through the breathtaking scenery.

The path there leads through rocky terrain and once you arrive you are rewarded with a panoramic view that makes you forget the effort of the climb. Even though the area is dominated by nature, here and there you can find small amenities, such as a shady hut that invites you to rest. Especially when the sky is clear, you can feel the peaceful atmosphere of this place.

It is advisable to bring enough water with you, as the climb can be demanding.

Mount Cofano

Highlight • Natural Monument

Monte Cofano offers hikers an impressive natural experience. As soon as you start the hike, you feel enclosed by the massive rock landscape. The rocky paths meander through the terrain and offer repeated views of the deep blue sea. The steep terrain is challenging, but the views of the dramatic rock formations make every step worthwhile. The jagged rocks that stand out against the bright blue sky are particularly fascinating.

Along the way you will come across palm trees that assert themselves between the rocks and from above you can see the vast coastline that stretches along the sea. The tranquility of the area is only interrupted by the occasional calls of birds, which gives the hike a meditative character.

But don't underestimate the heat and bring enough water!

Tower of Saint John

Highlight • Historical Site

This tower dates back to the seventeenth century and was part of the dense system of coastal watchtowers of Sicily placed to defend against Saracen attacks. The structure overlooks the north side of the coast and once communicated, raising the alarm through fire, to the east with the tower of Macari. The latter, in turn, was connected to that of San Vito, where the Sanctuary is located today; The system of towers continued eastward with the tuna fishery of Secco, Uzzo, Scopello, Guidaloca and so on up to the Palermitan area. To the west, the Tower of San Giovanni communicated with that of the tuna fishery of Bonagia, and then moved on to San Cusumano, Trapani (Torre di Ligny and Colombaia), Nubia, Marausa and San Teodoro, thus continuing with the towers of Marsalese to continue throughout the coast of the island.
As of July 2022, access from the south side has been blocked. The reason was the danger of falling rocks and breaking a bank edge. Therefore, the ban is unlikely to be lifted in the foreseeable future.
