Evangelical Church Neschwitz

Highlight • Religious Site

The Protestant church was built at the beginning of the 17th century with the inclusion of older parts, in 1693 the choir was changed and the tower was built. In 1796 redesigns were made, in 1834 a restoration took place. In 1945 the church was destroyed except for the surrounding walls. The reconstruction took place from 1947 to 1951, initially with a tent roof as a tower end; in 2009 the original closure was restored.

The church is a simple, plastered structure with a straight choir closure, which has been expanded with various additions. On the north side is the two-storey extension with a curved gable divided by several cornices. The massive square west tower with an octagonal bell storey had been covered with a flat tent roof since its destruction and was restored in its original form with a hood and lantern in 2009. The interior is finished with a plastered flat ceiling, which is divided by wooden beams. Single-storey, unmounted wooden galleries are built in on three sides. A wide triumphal arch communicates with the choir with a simple groin vault. A box is built in on the north side, including a round-arched door with a Renaissance profile. The original second choir bay was separated during the reconstruction and set up as a winter church with a flat wooden beam ceiling

Beautiful Krabat column on Wittichenau's market square, one of the highlights on the KRABAT cycle path. The column shows figures from the Sorbian legend of the Krabat.

Market square with milestone

Highlight • Monument

On the market square of the town there is a very beautiful, reconstructed Saxon post mile column from 1732, the original block of letters is in the Hoyerswerda Castle Museum. A Saxon post mile column, also known colloquially as a Saxon post mile column, is a milestone that specifies distances and walking times to within an eighth of an hour.

Saalau Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The small chapel, built in 1953, is the center of the small Sorbian village outside the gates of Wittichenau. From the 16-meter-high tower, the bell, probably the oldest in the diocese, calls people to prayer. It dates back to the 14th century and was originally used in the Wittichenau parish church.
