Rickford Chapel and Pond

Highlight • Historical Site

Rickford Chapel is a 19th century "Swiss style" Grade II listed Methodist chapel built in 1888 which sits on the edge of Rickford Pond.
Rickford Pond used to feed a paper mill and flour mill which were both built in the 18th century. The paper mill produced handmade paper until 1895 and the flour mill was unfortunately destroyed by fire.
It's on the main road so take care if stopping.

Like cheddar gorge but smaller and less touristy = more enjoyable! You won't get stuck in a traffic jam climbing this one!

Cheddar Gorge Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Totally achievable iconic climb. The whole thing is about 10km but it’s only steep for the first 1.5km or so. There is one really nasty steep hairpin but once you’re past that you’ve nailed it! I’d rather ride up than down. Very busy on summer weekends with cyclists, motorcycles and cars (plus tourist busses) so pick your time wisely. Cars can get aggravated and impatient and it’s difficult to pass.

Cheddar Gorge Upper Road

Don't be put off by reports that the Gorge is too busy or difficult... once you're past the tourist trap at the bottom it quietens down considerably and the hard climbing is relatively short lived (plus you're in jaw-dropping scenery!) Both of these slight inconveniences are worth overcoming for the top section of road, which gentle rises, firstly through beautiful woodlands and then through open fields, both as stunning as the Gorge itself in their own way!
