Wells Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Built from honey-coloured stone between 1176 and 1450, Wells Cathedral is an intricaticate example of Gothic architecture. It has been called "unquestionably one of the most beautiful" and "most poetic" English cathedrals, and its easy to see why.

You can visit the cathedral from 7am - 7pm. Three is also a cafe, shop, and possibility to go on a guided tour. You can find more information, here: wellscathedral.org.uk

Vicars' Close

Highlight • Monument

One of Britain’s oldest residential streets. Dating from the 14th century it’s a worth while visit for an cycle tour in Wells.

Black Down is the highest hill in the Mendips with Beacon Batch the highest spot point at 1,066 feet (325 m). There are a good set of bridleways in the area, many with gravelly surfaces suitable for gravel or touring bikes. The summit ridge path is particularly good, with amazing views of the Mendips and north towards Bristol.

Its a steady pull up to get to the top of the Mendips but rewarded by views out over the Severn estuary.

Cheddar Reservoir

Highlight • Viewpoint

Access to the paths from the Axbridge end is controlled via kissing gates, which you can't get through with a bike trailer or any other non-standard cycle. However wheelchairs or adapted cycles should be able to access the trails with a RADAR key.

Cheddar Gorge Climb

Highlight • Viewpoint

Not as hard or as busy as I thought it would be... and I went on a sunny Saturday in May! The bottom is tourist heaven or hell depending on your point of view, it gets quieter when you get to the serious stuff and the top shallower section (which is lovely) is very tranquil in comparison. There's only one steep but fairly short section... 20% max, the rest is around 10% and the top only around 5%... it's a joy... go on you'll love it!

Somerset Levels Wetlands

Highlight • Natural

An excellent route with all tarmac roads (apart from one very small minor main road section), rest all small side roads with very little car traffic. A number of pubs and eating places along the way, especially Sweets Tea Rooms near Wedmore - seems a favourite for cyclists. Good route for spotting wetland wildlife - especially Egrets and Swans.

Nice traffic avoiding trail that short cuts through between Glastonbury and Avalon Marshes. Part of cycle route 3 but a shared path with walkers so keep eyes open. There’s a lovely memorial garden to a teenage girl at one end that always breaks my heart. There are picnic tables and bike stands there so a nice place to stop, but I always feel so sad for the family.
