Beresford Gap Coastal Path

Highlight (Segment) • Beach

It's a great ride (and I have almost no sense of smell!). The path takes you most of the way from Whitstable around to Sandwich. Where you have to leave the path, the route is very well signposted (Viking Trail). There are also a few very short sections where you need to walk (past beach huts), but otherwise, you often have the path to yourself. There are cafes along the route, so you can usually find somewhere to stop every half hour or so. Additionally, there is a good train service along the coast if you don't feel like riding back!

Westgate Bay Coastal Path

Highlight • Cycleway

The cycle path leads along the shore past Westgate Bay and the iconic blue and yellow beach huts of Westgate-on-Sea. Around the headland cliffs to the west, the town's second blue flag beach St Mildred's comes into view. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the Victorian seaside resort as well as public toilets at Westgate Bay.

This fabulous cliff top path is part of the Viking Coastal Trail. It offers wonderful views of Botany Bay, known for its white cliffs and beautiful chalk stacks. The path runs beside a large green area with plenty of benches, offering a perfect place to stop for a picnic.

Ramsgate Beach

Highlight • Beach

Ramsgate has a fantastic harbour front with loads of great all-year-round restaurants and bars to enjoy after a day's cycling and exploring the area. Or you can chill out with a bag of chips on the sandy beaches after a great cycle! There's the Viking Coastal Trail which loops around the whole 'Isle of Thanet' (route 15 on the signposts) and more recently, the Pier to Pier cycle taking you from Ramsgate to Deal which is listed on the Visit Ramsgate website. The town itself has a growing creative and music scene with lots of independent shops to explore. Head to Harbour Bikes in one of the harbour's iconic arches for bike hire, servicing and repair should you need it!

Sandwich Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

A quintessentially-English town, Sandwich has a fascinating history. The small town was once an important trade hub and part of the Cinque Ports network on the coast. The medieval buildings and old pubs in town hark back to this era.

Sandwich's most notable role in history is perhaps its ties to the popular food, the humble sandwich. John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, allegedly invented the sandwich in the 18th century, putting together two pieces of bread and meat.
