River Leven

Highlight • Natural

Flowing 8 miles (12.8 km) from Windemere to Morecambe Bay, the River Leven is a stunning feature in the landscape. It carves through a rocky valley that has barely changed over the millennia.

In the past, steamers travelled along the river to reach Loch Lomond. Nowadays, the river is not navigable and is instead home to varied wildlife.

Grange-over-Sands Promenade

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A lovely old fashioned promenade with excellent views across the bay. The promenade is flanked with trees and flowers and runs through a park where you'll find crazy golf, gym equipment, cafes and a putting green. It's a perfect traffic-free route to cycle along the seafront.

Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve

Highlight • Forest

Spread over an area of 250 hectares (618 acres), Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve is a huge wildlife haven near Witherslack. The area is home to hundreds of species of birds, butterflies, reptiles and mammals. You might spot buzzards, peregrines, sparrowhawks or ospreys flying above the mossy landscape.

The reserve is open all year around although April to August is the best time to visit, especially when the Ospreys nest. There's bicycle parking available.

Arnside Railway Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

From the Promenade in Arnside, stop to admire the Arnside Viaduct, a 51-span marvel, carrying the Carnforth and Whitehaven Line over the estuary of the River Kent. It's 477 metre long (1566 feet), and is for trains only.

Initially crafted in 1856 as a singular track viaduct, this feat of engineering underwent expansion to accommodate twin tracks in 1863.
