Kittiwake Hotels at the Tromsø Art Museum

In front of the art museum there are particularly striking constructions full of seagulls. They are seagull hotels that want to reconcile two goals: guaranteeing the survival of the kittiwake on the one hand and the quality of life in the city on the other.
The latter came into question after a few years ago an ever-growing colony of kittiwakes seemed to take over the Tromsø art museum. Loud noises, intense smells and a large number of nests on windowsills and ledges caused an equally loud protest from the residents of Tromsø.
Three light and mobile tripod structures topped with sculptural nesting modules were developed in collaboration with researchers and placed next to the facade of the building. In this way, the nests that the birds made in these new "hotels" could be carefully and slowly removed from the building. Harmony with the local population was restored when the colony left, and the plan for the future is to install two larger and permanent colonies further away to attract more kittiwakes from other parts of the city.
