Thallwitz Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle was built around 1580. The Baroque garden was added at the end of the 17th century. The main avenue leads to the castle and, via a staircase with a Baroque fountain cascade, to the elevated terrace, where a Baroque new building was originally planned but was not carried out due to costs. It was used, among other things, as a hunting lodge. From 1943, it was even used as a clinic for plastic surgery, which was closed in 1994.

People & History

A carriage owner who made freights to Schmannewitz, Sitzenroda, Torgau around 1870 organized an annual children's festival and thought up the sack boat as a new fun. He could have taken this sack-horse from a legend that goes as follows: Emperor Heinrich liked to travel to the Dahlen Heathland to relax and hunt. When the Sorbs found out that the Emperor was going out again, they decided to ambush and kill him. But it was the time of the blueberries and a boy from Dahlen, who was walking through the heath, discovered the Sorbs and overheard them. He heard about the Sorbs' murder plans. When he set out to report this to the emperor, he was discovered and put in the sack. At night, when everyone was asleep, he got up and hopped to Dahlen to warn the emperor. In the Weimar Republic, it was common for groups of hikers arriving to have to buy sacks on the market square.
