Lautenthal

Highlight • Settlement

The mining town of Lautenthal owes its existence to a miner named Kaspar Bitter, who discovered a rich ore vein on the Kranichsberg around 1530. With some of the silver ore he had found, he went to the then sovereign, who paid him handsomely and prompted him to start mining in the valley of the lute. Three and a half centuries passed, during which every man in the village was connected with the mining industry, its changing ups and downs, its rare times of prosperity and frequent times of need, for better or for worse. Most of the mines ceased operations in 1930/31.
Today a state-recognized climatic health resort in the middle of the Harz Nature Park

It's these tracks that make MTB's heart beat faster. Great educational nature and a flowing path near the river Innerste.

ers from the reservoir across the dam. There is no other dam in the Harz Mountains with a flood protection facility constructed in this way.
If necessary, the water from the Innerste reservoir can be diverted to the neighboring Granetalsperre via an underground water tunnel. In this case, the water has to be pumped uphill about 90 meters, as the Granetalsperre is correspondingly higher.
Although the inner reservoir is used to produce drinking water, the water can also be used for sporting activities. You can swim, sail, fish, windsurf or take a rowboat on and around the lake. On the east bank there is also a campsite not far from the road.
An approximately seven kilometer long circular hiking / cycling path leads around the reservoir of the Innerste dam.
