Chapel Near the Fortress of Kotor

Highlight • Religious Site

The chapel ruin is located outside the fortress, on the mountain side behind it.
We were able to enter the chapel freely in 04.2024. The ceiling painting is rudimentarily present.
The hiking trail, which comes from the mountain ridge, forks at this chapel.
It has a small walled churchyard and around it are numerous wall remains of former buildings.

The fortress of Sveti Ivan or as the locals call it, the castle of San Giovanni is located above the old town of Kotor on the steep mountain slope. The fortification was built to protect the city from invaders.
1350 steps lead to the top. The castle was built 280 meters above sea level. The church of "Our Lady", which stands at a height of 100 meters, dates back to the 16th century.

Kotor and its bay are considered one of the most beautiful places in Montenegro. The sailors probably know this too, which is why they come with big boats.
But as soon as it gets steeper, the paths zigzag and are suspended...

Today we did the first notable tour of our vacation in Montenegro. It was a few km, because we left the car because of the catastrophic traffic in Kotor. After Dubrovnik, the little towns are difficult to inspire 😀 It was always nice (overcrowded). The city wall is actually mandatory, but we took the old donkey path and then climbed …

The early bird catches the worm, we thought, and we were already at 8:10 a.m. at the entrance to the fortress, which was supposed to open at 8 a.m. We also deliberately decided to go this official route, including an entrance fee of €8 per person, because we also leave a little money in the country and also want to …

Shore excursion to Kotor. City tour followed by a serpentine path up to the chapel of Sveti Dorge. After the descent, a quick trip to Kotor Beach and another walk around the city walls. Then back to the ship

We actually wanted to use the passage from the fortress wall to the old chapel, but since the ladder was removed, the almost 2m down the rock was too risky for us - hence the detour down and up again on the other side 🫣

A most stunning view of the picturesque Bay of Kotor & a beautiful landscape in southern Montenegro near the 😍 Adriatic Sea 😍
When we entered Kotor, it actually felt a bit like we were driving through one of Norway's beautiful fjords again - but in warm weather 😄
That's why I was really looking forward to this port. In warm temperatures, we set off up the path to the fortress shortly after docking. The entrance fee, which has to be paid at …

Today we moved into our next quarters and are now guests in the beautiful city of Kotor.

In the old town (Stari Grad) we collected a couple of impressions in a café opposite the clock tower. Paving stones as smooth as glass, narrow winding streets and houses reminiscent of Italy.
