Lake Henshaw was built in 1925 for agricultural purposes and provides water to the San Luis Rey River which ends in Oceanside. Part of the water also goes into Dixon Lake. 43,000 acres of land are protected.

The overlook gives you a wide view across the desert and distant mountain ranges, like Santa Rita Mountains and Rincon Mountains. There's room to safely pull over and take a break before tackling the next stretch.
