Description
If you're looking for an easy touring cycling route that combines urban convenience with historical charm, the Tower Grove Park loop from Cortex is an excellent choice. This easy 11.2-mile (18.1 km) route, with a minimal 300 feet (91 metres) of elevation gain, takes just over an hour to complete, making it perfect for a relaxed ride through one of St. Louis's most beautiful green spaces.
What to expect on Tower Grove Park loop from Cortex
The journey begins in the modern Cortex area, but quickly transitions into the serene, historic landscape of Tower Grove Park. As you cycle, you'll be surrounded by nearly 7,000 trees from around 340 species, making it an accredited arboretum and a fantastic spot for birdwatching. The park's flat terrain ensures an enjoyable ride for all fitness levels, allowing you to easily take in the 32 Victorian pavilions, lily ponds, and formal plantings that define its unique Gardenesque design. It's an easy ride that offers a rich visual experience without demanding much effort.
Planning your visit
A significant improvement for cyclists is the Tower Grove Connector, a 1.8-mile protected cycle track linking Cortex to Tower Grove Park. While Phase 1 of this connector, running along Tower Grove Avenue and South Vandeventer Avenue, began construction in June 2025 and is expected to be completed by Summer 2026, it promises a dedicated and safer path for your ride. This infrastructure helps mitigate the challenges of navigating busy urban streets, making the route more accessible and enjoyable. The park itself is a National Historic Landmark, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
