The Naviglio Grande was born as a defensive structure towards the beginning of the 12th century but it took another hundred years before it was transformed into a navigable waterway and reached Milan near Porta Ticinese. The Naviglio soon became a fundamental connection to Milan, goods of all kinds traveled along it.
