Branda Castiglioni Civic Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

Immersed in the ancient village of Castiglione Olona, set among ancient buildings, is the noble Palazzo Branda, the residence of Cardinal Branda Castiglioni. The palace was built in two different historical periods, divided into two distinct buildings. They are joined by a third architectural element where the chapel of the palace and the Renaissance loggia are located: the latter served as a link between the two distinct buildings.

The oldest building dates back to the 14th century. The second body, on the other hand, will be built in the 15th century by the will of the cardinal, who decided to expand and enrich his residence. These were the major interventions on the building, because with the death of the cardinal the palace remained almost unchanged: only minor adjustments and enlargements were made. Among the various examples that we could consider, there are the construction, in the sixteenth century, of the room called "of the picture gallery" and that of a staircase connecting the two floors of the building, built in the eighteenth century, near the Chapel of Saint martin. This was rediscovered after many years and in 1982 it was completely restored. It houses a significant series of frescoes by Lorenzo di Pietro, the Vecchietta, who created the entire decoration between 1437 and 1439.

Castiglione Olona train station

Highlight • Historical Site

Behind the old station there is a comfortable bar for a refreshment stop. The opening hours are not clear, especially on weekends. Alternatively, there is a comfortable bar in the historic center of Castiglione Olona, from which you can resume the cycle path across the old medieval bridge.

The Valle Olona cycle/pedestrian path extends for about 20 km from Castiglione Olona (VA) to Castellanza (VA) along the old Valmorea railway and the Olona river. The stream that gives the cycle path its name starts at Rasa di Varese, after 131 km it flows into the Po at San Zenone.

Oratory of San Michele, Gornate Superiore

Highlight • Religious Site

The country oratory is among the oldest in Lombardy. It is dated to the 5th-6th century, as the form of the Roman foot (29.6 cm) often occurs. The stratification of frescoes in the apse and in the triumphal arch is the result of subsequent interventions: the oldest date back to the Byzantine period. The work of greatest interest is the Two-Faced Janus, in ocher, dating back to the 8th century: it was probably part of a lost allegory of the months. The crucifixion dates back to the 15th century and recalls the one in the church of Bizzozzero.
