Lake Mezzola

Highlight • Lake

Lake Mezzola (in Lombard Lagh de Mezzoeula) is located north of Lake Como, from which it is separated by the last course of the Mera river which flows in the western edge of Pian di Spagna, the last plateau of Valtellina formed by the deltaic sediments of the 'Adda and Mera itself. About 20% of Lake Como's water comes from this lake.
The Mera's inlet flow rate is around 20 cubic meters per second, outflow of around 24, thanks to the contribution of the other tributaries which, despite having a relatively short course, bring a fair volume of water to the lake.
In 2004 the Ministry of Health classified Lake Mezzola as non-swimming. The regional environmental agency in 2016 classified the chemical state of the lake as "not good", due to high concentrations of chromium and other metals.
From the government water health portal, in 2020 the samples in two points of the lake (in front of the Corsican campsite and South Arsena) gave excellent results for bathing.

The whole place is a dream. Definitely go there, it's worth it not just for a short detour. Numerous places with locations to stop off. Also a few shopping possibilities. The Castell in front of a spectacular rocky backdrop. The rock formed by ice and water is also a special picture for geologists, as is the course of the Mera river between the houses. In my opinion, highly recommended!

Final Hairpin Bends of the Maloja Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

Beautiful border pass between Italy and Switzerland. With its 1800m it allows you to enter the valley where a splendid river welcomes the view.
Ascent that from Chiavenna presents a first section of about 18km that can be pedaled and with gradients never double digits; everything changes in the final stretch of 5km where a series of laps that climbs up the mountain will put you to the test.
One of the symbolic climbs of the area.

At this point it is worth taking a short break, as you have a fantastic view of the Morteratsch Glacier here.

View of the Morteratsch Glacier

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

One of the most panoramic points from which to observe the Morteratsch glacier, the largest by area of the Bernina chain of the Bündner Alps in Switzerland and the third largest glacier in the massif of the Eastern Alps.

Magnificent views of the surrounding Alpine peaks. The road is relatively busy, so if possible, start early in the morning so you can have the mountain world all to yourself.

Bernina Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The climb to the Bernina Pass starts from Tirano (440 m asl) and is 34 km long, in a wonderful valley with spectacular views over the Bernina glacier.

The first part of the road is a very challenging one, with steep slopes until the Poschiavo lake. You can easily cycle to Poschiavo (the town) even on secondary roads and bike paths. Then the climb, which is very long and hard, starts again up to the pass.

The average gradient of the slope is 7.5%, the maximum slope is 9,5%. The vertical drop is over 1.890 m.

Lake Poschiavo

Highlight • Lake

Formed by the post glacial landslide of Mount Giumelin, Lake Poschiavo has been an important resource for electricity production since 1904. A place much appreciated for the beauty of the landscape.
