Saint Peter's Church, Marennes

In the 12th century, the village of Marennes was a priory of the Abbey of Saintes. In the 14th century, it was incorporated into the royal domain by Charles V, who removed it from the jurisdiction of Saintes to transfer it to that of La Rochelle. At the end of the 14th century, Charles VI gave it the title of county. A church existed from the 11th century, rebuilt between the 11th and the 15th century. During the Wars of Religion, tradition has it that the church served as a temple and a fortress. At the beginning of the 17th century, the building was ruined, except for its bell tower. The rebuilding was launched in 1602 and completed in 1770. The building is covered with a roof around which reigns a sort of rampart surrounded by a projecting parapet resting on a row of consoles which feature machicolations. The bell tower is of ogival style. Its plan is quadrangular at the base and buttresses surmounted by triangular pediments. It is surmounted by a freestone spire, octagonal, furnished with projecting hooks on the edges and a series of triangles placed on the openings. Four acute pinnacles make up, on each face, the axis of the base of this arrow.

Bourcefranc was set up as a Frankish village at the time of the great medieval clearing after the parish of Marennes was ceded as a donation to the Abbaye-aux-Dames de Saintes in 1047. In the second half of the eleventh century, the high and limestone lands of this part of the peninsula of Marennes, where passed the ancient Roman road which ended at Chapus, were highlighted. An agricultural village was formed thanks to the privileges granted by the abbesses of Saintes. These needed manpower to clear the parish of Marennes, which was entirely covered with forest at the beginning of the eleventh century. In Gallo-Roman times, the tip of Chapus housed a fishing village and probably salt workers. This cape was the culmination of the ancient Roman road along which, in medieval times, the abbey of Saintes had many strongholds between Saintes and Marennes.
The Chapus is a Roman creation whose toponym reveals both its geographical role and its role of transit. This site means head, height, heading. In medieval times, it played the role of a landing stage for the Ile d'Oléron, a fishing port and above all a salt port. It was fortified late to house a citadel at the end of the seventeenth century, Fort Louvois, when the military arsenal of Rochefort was established from 1666.
In the aftermath of the Second World War, Le Chapus was chosen for the location of a modern landing stage built in 1947 to ensure ferry connections with the Ile d'Oléron.
When the Ile d'Oléron bridge was built in 1966, the pier became obsolete and the ferry connections to the Ile d'Oléron abandoned. This site subsequently became a gigantic collector for oyster farming, helping to make Chapus one of the very first oyster ports in France.
