HERVOS BARRACKS
This is undoubtedly the building used for the most varied activities in the Ville-Close. Originally called "Notre Dame de Cong" or "Notre Dame du Portail", it was one of the three churches within the city walls. In the 18th century, it was renamed "Notre Dame du Rosaire".
(Don't miss the multi-arched door and the base of the bell tower):
In 1828, the collapsed bell tower was replaced by a tall tower, the first lighthouse in the region.
For several centuries, the chapel also served as a municipal meeting place for the city's notables. It then became, in succession, an armory, a barracks, a school and a maritime cooperative. Today, it houses the "Musée de la Pêche".

Concarneau Walled Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Concarneau, famous for its fishing port, also has an undeniable picturesque appeal. Its walled town and its narrow streets which occupy an irregularly shaped islet, are protected by thick granite walls built in the 14th century. A stroll through this environment with its medieval and port atmosphere will delight young and old alike.

Wine Gate, Concarneau

Highlight • Historical Site

The Wine Gate
This picturesque little pointed arch dates back to the 15th-century renovation of the ramparis. The only easy access to the sea was through this gaie shai, a passageway for all bulky goods, including Bordeaux wine (hence the name).
Initially, the gate faced the sea, but by the 1st century, it could be closed at night with a wickerwork door and later with a portcullis. It was walled up in the following century to prevent surprise attacks. It was in use again during the Revolution.
With the introduction of sardine fishing in the 19th century, the abandoned sardine fisheries were brought under cover during the winter. The quay leading to the Careenage Arca was broken by the late 1920s.

Concarneau - Ville Close

Highlight • Monument

The modern town of Concarneau was built near the walled town, which is the old town surrounded by fortifications. Suburbs gradually developed on the mainland near this “island city”. It is only recently in the history of Concarneau that the city left its ramparts. The town of Concarneau is crossed by the Ria du Moros, a small coastal river which flows into its port.

Today, Sunday, is the "Fete des Thoniers", with music groups dressed up in strange costumes, wind instruments a la Querbeat" and samba groups that create a great atmosphere and parade through the whole city. In the afternoon we crossed over to the other side and hiked a section of the coastal path again. The last picture shows the view from …
