Basel SBB railway station

Highlight • Monument

Basel train station since 1845
In the 19th century, traffic and industrialization changed Basel: in 1832, a steamship docked here for the first time. Eight years later, the first railway in Switzerland ran on the Saint-Louis–Basel route, and a station was opened within the city walls in 1845. Soon, trains were running daily to Paris and Frankfurt.

Basel Market Hall

Highlight • Monument

Market Hall, Basel
The Basel Market Hall (also known as the "Grossmarkthalle") is a building constructed in Basel in 1929 that was used for market operations until 2004. After being vacant for several years, it was renovated and various specialist shops opened. Today, the market hall serves primarily as a venue for cultural events (e.g. flea markets, cooking courses, public tours, concerts, comedy nights and as a catering facility with street food stalls from all over the world.
The shell vault of the octagonal dome was a further development of the dome construction of the Leipzig wholesale market hall. It has a span of 60 meters, a thickness of eight centimeters, is 27 m, according to other sources 28 m, high and has the shape of cycloids. The design of the Basel market hall was by the engineer Adolf Goenner, who died in 1929 before the building was completed, and his partner, the architect Hans Ryhiner, who then oversaw the completion of the building.[3] The construction was carried out by Züblin AG according to the plans and calculations of Hubert Rüsch of Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG. At the time of its opening, the market hall was the third largest reinforced concrete dome structure in the world. The complex is now a listed building.[4] Until In 2004, the market hall served as a transshipment point and was closed due to changes in distribution channels.
