Port of Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Highlight • Other

The town of Saint Jean de Losne is situated at the southern extremity of the Burgundy canal, where the water flows into the river Saône. The port of Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the biggest boat hire bases on the Saône river, trying to reinvent itself in the shift from goods transportation to tourism. With a large choice of boats and different routes available this is a popular starting point for boating fans at the beginning or the end of a Burgundy canal cruise. From dry dock, barge construction to food supplies, this is one of the capitals for the barging world. There are wealders available, and parts & mechanics for any type of engine, from Boudin, Leyand, Perkins and Scania to Volvo. The local cafes are still occupied by bargees that are retired or waiting for another voyage, or maybe the river Soône is in flood and the level is too high for navigation. The town of Saint Jean is a very active place, but there always remains a sad side, it is a place of passage, transition, if you stay here for a long period it is generally because there is something wrong with your barge or boat. burgundy-canal.com/town-saint-jean-de-losne

Saint-Jean-de-Losne Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is originally a town located in an area surrounded by water. The bridge is therefore an essential element to allow access to the city. Originally, this bridge was made of wood and was located opposite the old Seurre road, downstream of the current bridge. It remained in place until the beginning of the 19th century, but these wooden constructions were not strong enough to withstand the floods of the Saône and the ice.
In 1838, a stone bridge was built on the site of the current bridge. It was destroyed during the wars of 1870, 1914-1918 and during an explosion in 1940.
The current bridge dates from the 1950s and is made of reinforced concrete.

St. Jean

Highlight • Other

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Saint-Jean-de-Losne is a 15th century church in Gothic and Renaissance style covered with glazed tiles.

An ex-voto boat dedicated to Saint Nicolas (patron saint of boatmen) suspended in the transept since 1826 recalls the river tradition of Saint-Jean-de Losne.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Highlight • Settlement

Saint-Jean-de-Losne lies at the junction of three major waterways: the Saône River, which flows towards the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea; the Burgundy Canal, which flows towards the Seine and the Paris Basin; and the Rhine-Rhône Canal, which flows towards the Rhine and Northern and Eastern Europe.

Saint-Jean-de-Losne is one of the smallest municipalities in France: a total of 0.60 km², of which 0.36 km² is land and the rest water.

Quai de la Hutte, Losne

Highlight • Other

At this wide part of the navigable river the canal boats can dock on the south side, with beautiful views to the town of St Jean and the entrance to its harbor. A few hundred meters further the tow path has an unpaved section, so the official EV6 bike trail here turns south to follow the road to Chagney for 2 km, where it reunites again with the towpath.
