Devil's Bridge

Highlight • River

This magnificent bridge allows you to admire: the entrance to the Hérault gorges; the Devil's Bridge, a medieval structure with two main arches (plus two secondary ones) which spans the Hérault at the level of the Gouffre Noir since the 11th century; the Saint-Jean-de-Fos bridge, which does not have the aura of the Devil's Bridge but which is still found in many photos and remains a very pretty bridge with a single arch; and an aqueduct in the background.

Built in the Middle Ages, the Saint Etienne-d'Issensac bridge spans the Hérault near the former priory of the same name. Originally, it allowed the passage of pilgrims to Saint Guilhem, a stopover on the way to Saint Jacques de Compostela. It was built in the 14th century on the back of a donkey and has retained three of the five original arches. This stone bridge may have replaced an old wooden work of art. It is still in good condition today, but the numerous restorations it has undergone since the 17th century suggest that few medieval elements remain. Designed for the passage of pedestrians, carts and animals, it is poorly suited to car traffic, due to its narrowness. However, I happened to come across a car while passing it. Fortunately, there are angular reinforcements on the side to park and let pass, because the crossing between a car and a bicycle or a pedestrian is impossible.
The surface is cobblestone and a little chaotic. You will probably have to slow down and maybe even dismount.
Finally, it is a bathing place, fitted out in summer.

Scenic road

Highlight • Other

This descent from Saint-Maurice-de-Navacelles to the valley that leads to Ganges is one of the most beautiful that I have taken.

You will really have fun taking this switchback road. If you go the other way, the climb is also very pleasant.

Along the way if you run out of water, you will find a small fountain along the road.
