Back Lane from Pilsley to Bakewell

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a beautiful back lane from Pilsley to Bakewell or vica versa. Both directions have steep sections but it's a great and beautiful way of avoiding the traffic. From the Pilsley direction, the descent in to Bakewell is very steep on a rough road which often has a lot of debris. I definitely would only recommend going from Bakewell to Pilsley in the winter months but on a dry day both directions are great with care on the descents

Tideswell

Highlight • Settlement

Tideswell is a large village that has the honour of being ‘Cathedral of the Peak’. The pretty village has narrow streets, quirky cottages and an utterly timeless atmosphere. Tideswell has a good choice of places to stay, eat and drink, making it perfect for a pit-stop or an overnight stay. The village has a packed calendar of events throughout the year, too.

Millers Dale Viaducts

The magnificent twin viaducts in Millers Dale were built in 1866 and 1905 by the Midland Railway company. These days, the structure carries the Monsal Trail, an iconic cycle route through this part of the Peak District.

The Bakewell Pudding – not to be confused with the Bakewell Tart, with a cherry on top – consists of a flaky pastry base with a layer of sieved jam and topped with a filling made of egg and almond paste. While the origins of the pudding are not clear, it’s believed to have been made by accident in 1860 by a lady called Mrs Greaves, who was the landlady of the White Horse Inn. The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop lays claim to the 'original' pudding, which it has created using a secret recipe since 1889.
