Alice Nutter Statue

Highlight • Monument

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the infamous witches trials, one of the best known – Alice Nutter – was immortalised as a statue in Roughlee village from where she came.

Alice was unusual amongst the accused in that she was comparatively wealthy, the widow of a tenant yeoman farmer. She made no statement either before or during her trial, except to enter her plea of not guilty to the charge of murder. She was hanged, along with nine others, at Lancaster in August 1612.

Amazing little village with excellent pub (Assheton Arms). The entire village has been owned by one family since 1558 so every property is rented. No satellite dishes are permitted, overhead cables or road signs. There isn’t even a village sign. Was the village where they filmed Whistle Down the Wind.

Its historic buildings house fascinating tales: Henry VI went into hiding in Waddington Hall for 12 months, before he was betrayed to the Yorkists in 1465. Today, you can explore the pretty village and enjoy a slice of cake at the bike-friendly cafe opposite the church.
