Maryport Harbour

Highlight • Structure

Maryport was founded in 1749 when Humphrey Senhouse started to develop the existing village of Ellenfoot into a bustling port, following the example set by Whitehaven. He named it after his wife, Mary.

It grew to be an industrial centre during the 19th century but suffered a decline in the mid 20th century. Today, it is a popular tourist spot, boasting an aquarium, yacht marina and museums.

Maryport Marina

Highlight • Parking

Maryport has its own SSI on the grass banks around the Marina, which lays host to rare flowers and butterflies. There is plenty of parking available by the harbour and marina on the sea front. While there, you can also enjoy the stunning coastal walks.

The coastal village of Flimby has much to offer the walker. A beautiful stretch of raised beach between here and Siddick is a riot of colour in spring and summer. Inland are trails through the pleasant Flimby Great Wood, a nice place for an afternoon stroll. Meanwhile, just a short drive away is Cockermouth, gateway to the north western Lake District.

Navvies Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Navvies Bridge is a modern pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Derwent in Workington, Cumbria, built in 2011 to replace an earlier bridge that was destroyed in the 2009 floods. The new bridge is designed as a twin-ribbed untied bowstring arch of steel, with a span of 84.8 metres and a deck width of 3 metres — almost double the width of the original bridge.
