Newcastle Harbour

Highlight • Structure

If you fancy a dip after all those hills, this is a very safe spot for swimming. The slipway at the side of the harbour wall is the preferred entry point.

If you look back along the side of Slieve Donard, you will see some cottages known as “Widows Row”. These were built for the widows of fishermen who died at sea. They would be able to live out their days in one of the cottages looking out to sea.

Sea on one side and the Mournes on the other, it's a pretty great place to ride a bike.

Crocknafeola Wood

Highlight • Viewpoint

Lovely Crocknafeola wood covers an area of around five acres and is a mixture of scrubland, Douglas fir and spruce. There are a number of trails throughout the wood, which have amazing views towards the village of Attical and Slievemageogh.

The woods are certainly worth an explore, you are rewarded with perfect views across the landscape for relatively little effort.

Trassey Road

Highlight • Parking

Narrow, bumpy but quiet Mountain road in the heart of the Kingdom of Mourne. A couple of Car parks along the road to get out and hike the Mountains (do not leave valuables on show within your car as thieves operate here).

Forest paths along the Shimna river marked by many curiosities, both natural and artificial. Rocky outcrops, bridges, grottos and caves. Elsewhere in the park the tree lover can find exotic trees such as monkey puzzle and eucalyptus, or admire the tall giant redwoods and Monterey pines.

Oak wood from Tollymore was the preferred material for the interiors of the White Star liners including the 'Titanic' which was built in Belfast.
