Simonsbath Village

Highlight • Restaurant

A small and pretty Exmoor village in Somerset, near the River Barle, very close to the source of the River Exe. It's on both the Two Moors Way and the MacMillan Way West. Find a few places here to relax inside; the Exmoor Forest Inn and the Simonsbath House Hotel, as well as some beautiful picnic spots alongside the river in better weather.

Withypool Stone Bridge

Highlight • Settlement

Withypool is a quiet village in the Barle valley with a distinct upland character. Along the banks of the River Barle grow the willow trees that give Withypool its name. The village is home to a characteristic six-arch stone bridge, which was built roughly 100 years ago to replace an old packhorse bridge up river.

Castle Hill Estate

Highlight • Monument

Castle Hill was built in 1730 by the Fortescue family and reconstructed following a large fire in 1934. It was caused by the boiler for the newly installed central heating and tragically killed both the housekeeper and a maid.

On top of the hill behind the house is Sham Castle.

The family still live on the estate which is now also used as a wedding and conference venue and the gardens are open to the public. For more information visit their website castlehilldevon.co.uk
