Herbrand Walk at Cooden Beach

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Cooden Beach is a gently sloping shingle bay. National Cycle Network route 2 takes you right next to this beach on a single lane road. It's a great opportunity to take a dip, but bear in mind that this section gets quite busy in the summer with camper vans.

Pevensey Levels (Site of Special Scientific Interest)

The Pevensey Levels are nestled between Bexhill-on-Sea and Eastbourne. The flat roads are a quiet place to cycle. Surrounded by wetland meadows and small rivers, it is a calming place to be. The small rivers are known as ditches, but they are far nicer than that word suggests.

Herstmonceux Castle

Highlight • Castle

This extraordinary castle dates back to the 15th century and is one of the best examples of an Elizabethan brick castle. The gardens are Grade-II listed and, in total, the castle grounds extend to 300 acres (121 ha).

The extraordinary estate is open to visitors throughout the summer period and there are often events going on, such as medieval weekends, particularly great for families. The castle is occasionally open for visitors but is mostly used as a study centre, and a wedding and conference venue.
