The Suffolk market town of Newmarket is the birthplace and spiritual home of horse racing. The sport has taken place here since 1174 and continues to this day.

It's hard to escape this association while in the town; there are over 50 horse training stables and 3,500 racehorses. The National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art is worth a look to find out more about Newmarket's history. Here, you'll find the National Horseracing Museum.
