Blakeney Harbour

Highlight • River

A pretty village on the edge of the Norfolk Coast, Blakeney is well worth a visit. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the village was a commercial seaport. Nowadays the former harbour is used as a nature reserve where you can see one of the biggest seal populations in the UK. Blakeney has not always been the calm village it is today: from the 12th century, the village was known for pirates. Locals would often steal the cargo of foreign merchant ships who docked at the port. The villagers were so lawless that they even refused to give a ship to the battle against the Spanish Armada!

Today, you will find a relaxing tourist resort with hotels, pubs, great restaurants and various coastal activities.

This ruined, 15th-century building harks from the time when Blakeney was one of Norfolk's most important ports. While it's called the 'Guildhall', there's no evidence that it's ever served as such, and is more likely to have been a merchant's house.

Inside, you'll find a brick-vaulted undercroft – the first storey of the house no longer exists. The site is owned by English Heritage and you can see the exterior whenever you like, but check opening times if you'd like to see inside.

This bakery is a Suffolk gem which has graciously spread into neighbouring Norfolk. A bracing walk into the wind was rewarded with a dark hot chocolate, toasted stollen and Brandy cream, delicious

Blakeney Village

Highlight • Settlement

The charming coastal village of Blakeney was historically a medieval commercial port transporting spices and oriental cloths. Smugglers also took advantage of the remote position on the marshes. These days, the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is an amazing landscape of marshes, mud banks and sand hills that is home to many bird species, including avocet, marsh harrier, redshank, oystercatcher, lapwing, sandwich tern, pink-footed goose, and many more.
