St Michael's Mount Causeway

Highlight • Historical Site

Follow an ancient cobbled causeway over the water to the magnificent St Michael's Mount in West Cornwall.

The causeway is only safe to cross for a few hours at low tide, so it's essential to check the tide times before visiting. cornwalls.co.uk/weather/marazion-tide-times.htm

Throughout Marazion and the wider area you have beautiful views of St Michaels Mount. After all, this castle on an island off the coast dominates the entire bay, called Mount's Bay

On the metal fence is the first line of a song "Abide with me, fast falls the eventide" and below that the notes. Some research tells me that "Abide with Me" is a Christian hymn by Scottish Anglican clergyman Henry Francis Lyte. A prayer to God to remain with the speaker throughout his life and death was written by Lyte in 1847 as he was dying of tuberculosis. It is usually sung to the tune "Eventide" by English organist William Henry Monk. You can listen to this on youtube sung by Audrey Assad

St Erth Church

Highlight • Religious Site

St Erth Church is a Grade I-listed place of worship in a picturesque position next to the River Hayle. The church was built in the 15th century, underwent restoration in 1747 and was partially rebuilt in 1872-73. However, the exterior of the church remains intact and is a fine example of a granite-built church from this era.

View of St Michael's Mount

Highlight • Castle

From here is a great view of St Michael's Mount, a tidal island that is home to a castle and a church. Access to the island is possible by foot across a causeway at low to mid tide.

Looked after by the National Trust, you can visit St Michael's Mount, which is still home to a community of people, cut off from the mainland at every high tide. See their website for further details nationaltrust.org.uk/st-michaels-mount

The site is historically linked to Mont St Michael in Normandy, which is a very similar tidal island.
