Burgh Marsh

Highlight • Cycleway

Burgh Marsh is a vast salt marsh on the Solway Firth, where nature, history, and mystery converge. Located near Burgh by Sands, the area forms a key part of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. King Edward I died here in 1307 during his campaign against Scotland, an event marked by a monument in the middle of the marsh. Bordering the western section of Hadrian's Wall, Burgh Marsh also bears traces of the Roman presence. Today, Burgh Marsh stands as a silent witness to centuries of frontier history, with a landscape that invites reflection and exploration.

Colonel Tom Moore Mural

Highlight • Monument

On the facade of Jack's Surf Bar in Allonby is a large-scale mural of Colonel Tom Moore, created in May 2020 by Maryport artist Bethany Gray. The work was created during the COVID-19 pandemic as a visual tribute to Moore's fundraising efforts for the NHS and was made possible by local community support.

Holmcultram Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Founded in 1150 by the Cistercian Monks of Melrose Abbey, Holme Cultram Abbey was once much larger than the building that is left today. In fact, it was once bigger than Carlisle Cathedral itself. However, following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538 the monks departed. Today the building survives as the parish church for Abbeytown.

Wedholme Flow Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

Although consisting of boggy landscape, Wedholme Flow is a unique nature reserve. Part of the South Solway Mosses Natural Nature Reserve, the area is full of rare insects, weird plants and unusual colours. Here, you will find the bright red sundew plant that catches and eats insects with its sticky leaves, and oddly shaped lichen that look other worldly. There are various trails that lead through the wetlands.

St John's Church, Newton Arlosh

Highlight • Historical Site

The lands to the north and south of the border between England and Scotland have historically suffered something of a tug of war between the two great nations. Invasions and raids were commonplace through the centuries.

St John's Church in Newton Arlosh is an interesting remnant of such a time, looking as much like a castle as a church. Crenelations line the top of the defensive pele tower, whilst the windows are nothing but arrow slits. Even the door into the church is remarkably narrow. This meant that newly married couples would have to leave in single file. The locals say that whoever emerges into the churchyard first, having tied the knot, is destined to be 'the boss'.
